I just found a site with 9 Google ad units on each page. Is that a record?

No a record is a round thing .....

Sorry, I couldn't resist that.

I haven't seen one with so many but were they all for the same account? I know of "free" hosting services who use Adsense in some geographies and their customers sometimes use Adsense too. (The ones who then complain on forums that they haven't made a fortune two weeks after putting minimal content on line)

Premium accounts are allowed more. Did you check the code to see if it was or not ?

A certain newspaper site I sometimes visit has one (vertical) block of 8 adverts, plus another block containing 2 adverts. (Then there's other advertising too.)

Lame_Wolf is right. Premium accounts have the opportunity for a higher number of ad units and the ability to use custom sizes.

but i guess google adsense doesn't allow premium accounts anymore.

those which already have such accounts, continue to enjoy the benefits though.

Makes sense to have different rules for different accounts, no? Especially since the large ones can be manually inspected and approved by Google. Having a 250 word definition and a 2500 word article makes a lot of difference when it comes to the number of ads

The odd thing is they would probably make more money with just one ad per page.
