Very Poor 30th June 2010

Easily My Worst Day Of The Month

Wednesdays used to be one of my best days of the week however yesterday's and last week's were both much lower than usual to the extent that the 30th saw my worst day of the month with earnings down 33% of average which was 10% less than the previous lowest day and 50% of what I would normally expect for a Wednesday.

Not only that but actual Page Impressions were also down 10% and when compared to my logs I had a completely normal day.

I don't believe I've ever been hit by monthenditis before and with this running up to a big holiday weekend this does not bode at all well.

Anyone else finish June with a whimper?

Also is anyone else seeing other days doing better now? My worst day used to be a Saturday however recently it has been perfoming well above average!

Something is definitely going on, hope all this talk about double dipp recession is not freaking people out.

I have seen a drop over the last 2 days as well, was doing great before that record month in June.

The hurricane probably had some people attention as well.

4th of July, is probably the culprit.

I have seen a significant dropoff, too. Ranging from 30% off the average day to 50% difference from the high points. Hoping it's the
  • World Cup,
  • 4th of July holiday,
  • regular vacations,
  • end of month dropoff.

The number of people I know who are taking vacations this year are significantly higher than last year. Seems like everyone's off to somewhere else right now. lol

Usually, I pay little attention to fluctuations. But, my AS revenues were down around 25% for June, and I was down around 50% for another high traffic program I'm in. In my case, the big G long tail algo change could be a contributor along with summer doldrums.

I've seen a mild uptick the last couple of days, however.

While most of my numbers have been down I have noticed that my ecpm's have increased quite measurably! There have been continuous days when I have earned a dollar or more per click but since my # of clicks has gone down then my earnings are less. While my # of clicks have gone down my traffic numbers still remain steady.

Traffic dropped, hence the lower earnings.

When will this end?

Traffic dropped, hence the lower earnings.

Not necessarily true. I have earnt more on days when I have had 10k visitors a day, to when I have had 18k on another. More traffic doesn't mean more earnings.

Today though, my CTR is way higher than normal, but the CPC is way down.

Netmeg, Gouri,
I don't mean to hijack this post but I am seeing text formatting buttons (for the first time in years) which I couldn't see before. the problem must be on my end.

So Friday it bounced back to north of a buck. Today, back down to the $0.21 CPM. Is this all because of the holiday weekend? A 75% drop?

Yes, Lame_Wolf, I agree. I've had better earnings with lower traffic as well. Earnings are lower because of drop in traffic, most of the time, especially since March 2010, my main website is having a fluctuation in traffic.

Today hasn't been a good day both in earnings and traffic. I expected July to be my best month. Sigh..

Play_Bach, I hope and pray that this is only due to the holiday of July 4th. July 4th 2009 has double what I made today. Sunday is normally my highest earning day of the week.

CTR is like a little less than half of normal. I can understand the traffic being down but for CTR and therefore eCPM to be so low, I don't understand that part.

Lowest 4th of July since we started adsense 7 years ago. CTR now down 50% from just two years ago. Running the numbers it goes
2003 start with adsense
2004 growth 30%
2005 growth of 40%
2006 growth of 25%
2007 loss of 40%
2008 loss of 20%
2009 growth of 30%
2010 loss of 70%

For our largest property it really isnt a EPC issue, we are getting very big payouts per click. Actually the best we have ever seen. Problem is people are just not clicking like in years past. I mean CTR is just plain falling apart and we have of course tried everything.

We dont want to deceive users so we make our ads clear and really havent changed that policy in 7 years. We think that in the long run this leads to a better conversion ratio for advertisers and a increase in bidding on our site as it will convert better. The epc part of that is clearly working. Problem is that users are just plain ignoring the ads.

These are really good ads to, some of the best we have ever seen. Very well designed and actually made to target our users. Given the vast sample size of my user base and shear volume of channels covered I can only conclude that the user is clearly NOT interested in clicking and buying right now and this trend is only accelerating over the last 6 months.

I saw the same behaviour right before the first recession. Oh well, I guess the second act is finally about to debut. Excuse my poor spelling tonight. Its the 4th and yes I am three sheets to the wind.

5th of July is a non-working day in US?

Normal day. Some *may* have taken extended leave.

This year, the 5th of July is when the Federal Independence Day holiday is observed for a large number of people with jobs who work a regular weekday schedule. So yes, a lot of Americans won't be working this Monday.

Is that a new thing Lapizuli ?
Can't say I noticed it when I lived over there. Everyone near us were working.

Interesting days!

Thursday 1st July bounced back to completely normal.

Friday 2nd July the same.

Saturday 3rd July Page Impressions down some 20% of a regular Saturday however CTR up and ended up a normal day's earnings.

Sunday 4th July slightly lower P.Is. than Saturday yet CTR remained good with average EPC therefore ended up ok.

Now can everyone please stop having unneccessary holdays? :-)

Compared to last year traffic is down, and income is up, not enough of either to get excited about

So far the weekend could let me buy a few more hamburgers than usual. :)

People need to get back to work! Traffic and income down, tomorrow should be back to normal.

I was just on the highways and traffic (cars) was light, they are usually bumper to bumper so most are off today, and recovering from last nights party.

@Lame_Wolf:

Hmmm, I'm not sure how new it is. Some people get it off; some don't. I think it's something like:

If you work a regular hourly job, you get a day off for July 4th. When you get the day off depends on what your workweek is, when the holiday falls and whether or not your place of work is closed, which is related to the industry you're in.

I know from personal experience that most school employees, public & private, got today (Monday the 5th) off.

A lot of people do go back to work today, though. I'm pretty ignorant about all the ins and outs of the regulations. But I think if you work for an hourly wage at a place of work that keeps regular business hours, you probably got today off. On the other hand, I've been out of the regular working world for a few years due to momhood and writing online. So what do I know?

Back to topic - my June 30th went out with a whimper, but that's normal in my world - the last days of the month either are pretty sad or pretty glad for me.

My sites are not targeted to US audience and still my earnings went down from about 2nd,3rd July till 5th July. I dont know why. Because in my target audience countries it was a working day, my traffic was normal and no abnormal activity whatsoever I can identify.
I dont want to hijack this thread but I noticed very weird stats yesterday. Some of my channels were reporting more than 100% CTR.
I dont know may be reporting error. But never seen this before. Also the impressions in these channels are not very few but in hundreds if not in thousands. So I can say few hundred impression and 100% clicks? How this is possible? Is it some kind of attack on my sites?
PS: I have not changed anything in my site in last week or so.

Thanks
Rajiv

I have been much above normal on CPC for several nitches so it must be related to the nitch as the 2 that are way up are in right now and will drop off in a couple months. Right now it is really nice and now that I know what the % breakdown is on payments this really helps me get a cost the advertiser is paying.

To answer the thread though all our stats are normal. June 30 through July 5th have been fine.
