Hello Webmasters-
I have another noob question, it my be inappropriate to ask even but I'm trying to figure out what I don't know so thanks for bearing with me.

I have a general tech news site (google news listed). I'm curious about the relative success, or lack thereof, of my CTR.

Anyone with a general tech news site care to chime in w/ their ctr? mine at this point is about 1% and I'm not sure if that's good/bad/average for this type of site.

Thanks in advance. please delete the thread instead of booting me if this is out of line :)

People reading the news typically aren't looking to buy stuff.

People reading automotive news might be looking for cars or tech news maybe for a new computer, but seriously, how often do you sit there reading about a new graphics card or something do you look over at the ad and go "Wow! I need that card NOW!"

Typically people reading tech news are just keeping up on the trends, not looking to buy anything, so that low CTR are the ones actually in a buying mood.

If it's general technology news and you have high impressions then maybe you can do ok with the CPM ads, in which case you should add CPM friendly ad units, usually the bigger ones.

If you want to get away from general news then reviews may offer a chance to monetize but you might be better off using an affiliate link so that you will be sure to match the product on offer to what was reviewed. Ending the review with a link embedded into something like, check out the low prices here, might get a better CTR and return. The bad news though is that although you might do well with an affiliate link you might not do so well with an AdSense ad showing competing products- imo.
