Are you using Image Ads?

How do they do?

Hi,

Are you using image ads?

I have in the past but they have not performed well. Adsense keeps writing and saying they will maximize earnings, but they have never worked great in the past.

However, now since there are less ads and earnings are down I am considering them.

What has been your experience?

Please give some indication of traffic so we know what your data is based upon.

thank you

I have always opted for text and image ads, and they've performed OK for me. Recently, however, I have noticed more and more image ads, which is probably the full integration of Doubleclick into the mix. It has depressed CTR and earnings overall.

See that's my point. Why would someone use images if it depresses the CTR and therefore the already-low earnings.

I doubt if image ads are causing a drop in earnings; it's more likely that a drop in earnings is resulting in more image ads. When the well of higher-paying contextual ads starts to run dry, you're more likely to see placement-targeted CPM ads.

To put it another way, image ads on the AdSense network are probably similar to remnant ads on display networks in many (though not necessarily all) cases.

In my niche the relevance of image ads was far lower. I dropped them as much because they detracted from the user experience as because of the slightly lower ctr.

If the image ads are CPM ads (as I'd guess they are in most cases), they aren't necessarily supposed to be relevant to the page topic, and CTR shouldn't matter since they're being bought by the impression, not by the click. (The industry-wide CTR for display ads is about 1/10 of 1 percent.)
