before I can place adsense ads on it?
Or can I place adsense ads on my site and then start getting hits...
The reason I ask is because I don't want to get a bunch of hits without making any money of them :P

Nope, there are no traffic requirements.

Google AdSense and AdSense for search is open to website publishers of all sizes. Please read our program policies to ensure that your content fits in to our guidelines.

IIRC you actually have to have a site up and running before you apply so you can't get Adsense from day 1.

It depend on what kind of site you have.

Forum tend to earn smaller than product review site. Porn and warez site have to seek other way to monetize traffic.

No hits, but you do have to have some content.

How many hits will that be when you are just getting started? FAR more important to get your site online and tested, maybe even start publicizing it, before you put the ads on. You want it tested and working before applying.
