Someone turn over they website to me and I will be running the website and keeping all the google adsense profits generated from that site.

I transfer the website my web server and everything is up and running

-Now I need to change the google adsense code to direct it to my account this way I can start earning money.

-Can I change only the google ad client only and keep the rest of the code? This way it doesn't change the layout of the website. I am not sure what size the old owner was using.

Don't do it that way.

Remove all adsense code and put your adsense code generated by you in place.
It's maybe some extra work. But you can never implement their channels and layouts (especially now with the new system).
You will also be aware of all channels and layouts if you (re)make them yourself.
And last but not least : this way you will be 100% according to TOS.
Good luck.

The TOS indicates publishers aren't supposed to change the ad code.

If there are a lot of pages to be changed, you might try and contact AdSense support by email and see if they will grant you an exception.

Also, you should be able to view the published site and determine the ad sizes that were being used.

On my website the adsense is located on the top page, bottom right and bottom of the page.

When I copy and paste thew new script this will change all three? Or do I need to request each script for each section?

Those ads are probably each in their own divs, and you will have to paste the code into each one (i.e., three times). Be aware that if you have different types of ads (referrals, regular Adsense, and link units) then you will need to generate new code for each of them.

You'll need to change all three.

But first, you probably will want to spend some time reading prior threads on this forum to decide if you really want to keep three AdSense displays on each page.

I use Front Page and have all my ads as "include" statements. That way I can change them within seconds. Maybe worth thinking about implementing your new ads so that they can quickly be changed for the future.

I use frontpage...

Frontpage is 90's technology, if possible move to CMS. It will save lots of your time in a long run.

I still use "Search and Replace" back from the Windows 98 days. It works well for me, so I never had to upgrade it.

Just generate your new code.
