I've just seen only my second image ad so far, a large leader type banner. Unlike the first adv this one was well designed, promoting a course from a US university. Hopefully in the runnup to xmas, advertisers will be up to speed with the design and format.

I wonder why people think image banners would do better than text ads. Banners have been proven to be ineffective, what's more, where you can show 2-4 text ads you can only show 1 image ad in the same real estate. I would stick to text ads

Banners can be very effective if they're targeted to the audience reading them. (Most banners aren't--they're just low-response run-of-network ads).

IMHO, Google's "image ads" will create demand from big advertisers and ad agencies that wouldn't dream of buying little AdSense text ads. That, in turn, will drive up bids and possibly create an opportunity for Google to sell AdSense ads on a "bid for CPM" rather than a "bid per click" basis.

I hope Google doesn't switch from CPC to CPM. If they
really want maybe they can give publishers an option
in their adsense code to choose whether they want this
particular channel to be paid CPM or CPC :)

i think people like to have image ads, cause they think it will pay them more.

and yes a targetted image ad will fetch high click thru

I run a news website and have been very pleased with image ads so far. Although they don't appear often the image ads are always tightly targeted to the subject of the news story and result in higer than normal clicks.

i run image ads for a month. 3 of my channels had them running frequently. my CTR spiked initially (novelty of the banner), then plummeted. must be due to the fact that my visitors only see the same 3 ads for those channels. my CTR went back to its normal range after i removed the image ads and sticked with text ads. decided not to experiment further and risk my revenues.
