I was just curious why a merchant would run adsense on their site. This is NOT a criticism. Instead, it just seems to me that running adsense on a site that actually sells things (a merchant) is a invitation to lose lost sales and potential long-term customers. It's also an invitation to lose affiliates too, but thats another story I guess.
So if you are a merchant, and you run Adsense on your merchant site, I was just hoping to get your input on why you run it and what results you have. The reason I ask is that when in "consumer mode," I very, very rarely will buy anything off a merchant site that runs Adsense...adsense banners make the site seem like one of those "here by day", "gone by night" type merchants..but that may just be me.

1. They are greedy and don't realise that it actually has a negative effect for a potential customer to go to buy something from a page and see these types of adverts on it.
2. It works effectively for them in their niche or mass market.
3. They are not very successful at sales revenue at all and adsense supplements their small income.
I've added adsense to selling sites and have got a significant income, with no harm to the merchandising on the site.
But I agree that a site that 'plasters' adsense allover is saying 'I give up'.
The way I look at it, giving the visitor one more option is unlikely to hurt me - the visitor will either buy from me, or not - and so why not let it help?
there is a balance of content v clutter, and many overdo the selling, but it's a matter of what you think YOUR visitors will appreciate. If you choose to dismiss sites on that basis, that's fine. But not everyone does!
Actually, adsense ads can make a site more professional looking. Our sales actually increased after adding adsense. You have to remember, most people are blink to adsense ads because they are so used to seeing them.
Additionally, if you are the lowest price on the web person, there is really not much you have to worry about. People love to shop and more than likely choose the lowest price they can find.
3. They are not very successful at sales revenue at all and adsense supplements their small income.I have a product that doesn't sell very well from my website directly but does pretty good through retailers. So adsense gives me a few dollars on the people who just watch the video samples and I accept the desperate appearance as a trade off.
I've heard the argument that adsense gives a site a professional appearance, I disagree and feel the more professional a site was the worse adsense makes it look. IMO.
personally, I've always taken the line that I can take or leave adsense; I hardly notice it. And I suspect that's a majority view. But when on a website that didn't have quite what I was looking for ... And, again, evidence shows that visitors do use adsense in such circumstances.
Compare that with the sites that use pop-ups ... then hand me my automatic weapon ;)
But What matters is what visitors think.
