How many of you started using Adsense to "cover webhosting

.. and then figured out you can make a living off of it

I am sure there are a lot of people out there, and a lot of people just starting who first used Adsense to maybe cover your web hosting costs and not really worrying about ad placement, blending, and such.

When I first started using Adsense, I just wanted to make a couple cents a day to cover my $10 a month web hosting. I really never thought about the possibilities at that point. I was ecstatic when I reached my first .50 cent day, then my first $1 day.

Suddenly I started making $10+ per day, then realized that Adsense would be great for gas and lunch money. Then all of a sudden my monthly earnings were the same as my monthly work pay. I thought it couldnt have been real so i waited for a couple checks to clear.

At this time I wanted to move to California, start my own life. I figure this would be a great time to do it since I had cashflow from my website, which would give me enough time and money to find a place and work. The job hunt wasnt very successful so I decided to concentrate more on my website, and in about a month my earning from g doubled what I used to make at my old job.

Here I am two years later, doing what I love to do all because I "wanted to cover webhosting". I just wanted to share this to all the Adsense beginners and show that If you pay attention to your site, and the TOS, anything is possible.

Feel free to share your own start-up stories

Nearly right! It's actually in Norfolk

I holidayed there once in the '50's with my aunt and uncle, great time with fantastic beaches if I remember correctly?

Make Note: Cannot afford to move to New California or south east England without Google giving me a pay rise:-)

I suppose it was my fault this thread went off.

California is the absolute LAST place I would move to! The state tax burden is horrendous - they even want to tax your retirement earnings. If you move out of state after you retire the state government will try to chase you down to get your last nickel.

Your living the American Dream baby, how much life insurance you got? Bet you have 2 mortgages, drive a Hummer and have a fist full of pretty maxed credit cards.

I have just one mortgage. We have 3 cars, two cars are paid off, payment on the last one is almost $700. I have no credit card balances or other loans, just the car and the mortgage.

American Dream? I don’t think so! Maybe American Reality!

I too started my website as a hobby so I could learn Asp.net programming in a 'live' environment. Because I did not have much in the way of content (it was a single page directory of my favourite links) I added Adsense to have some dynamic content... lol

After about a month or two I realised that I was going to earn a lot more than just my hosting costs.

My 'Hobby' has grown out of hand, currently I have over 1000 pages and my girlfriend is jealous of the time I spend with my laptop... paid for by G, of course. (the laptop, not the girlfriend ;) )

I started my site 5 years ago as a hobby. Was lucky enough to have the site hosted for free so had no ads whatsoever.

Hosting company went bust about 6 months ago - so I put adsense on to pay for hosting. Hosting costs approx $80 per month, adsense revenue was approx $500 per month. Wahey!

As the site is a local community site I am very happy to continue it as a hobby. After paying hosting ALL revenue goes to local charity.

I'm from the UK btw, and after 5 cheques my site is still up and running with approx £1,000 going to a good cause.

"how many of you started..."

Not any more, with the 27 June screwup. Our revenue is only 35% of what is was before Many Junk Sites got higher than us in the Serps.

Our sites have twice the number of quality link-ins, and 50 times the quality and depth of content of any of those other "junk sites"...

So WHY are we being screwed by Google?

BTW-

If you count Health Insurance in Amerika as a tax, then I actually pay LOWER TAXES in the UK than I did in Kalifornia. God bless the NHS (National Health Service).

OK - you are confusing me with these spellings.

We've already established that according to Google earth California is in Norfolk (on the way to Belgium if you draw a line through it from my house). Strangely enough none of the residents of California have a £ sign on their keyboards. Must have been a cheap job lot at the local PC World. Also, they seem to live in a parallel universe somewhat resembling an Australian soap opera. Small villages are like that - just take the village where Miss Marple lives, a murder every 2 minutes.

I looked up America on Google earth and it doesn't exist. It points to a blob in the pacific somewhere near a nameless large land mass south of Canada.

Why the hostility towards our American cousins, david? Bending a thread makes for added interest and in this case is showing what people can achieve in the real world from dear ole Adsense. Just wish I was in this league...

I started my site to see what this blogging thing was about. I liked it, so I put adsense on the site to cover hosting costs. I paid for a year's hosting the first month. Now, the site pays for my golf habit (and an expensive habit it is)

I started to cover hosting costs and somehow ended in SO California.

Seriously, I'm still only covering hosting costs... with a few bottles of wine as a bonus.

I started as a hobby. Was excited when Valueclick started paying 12 cents vs. six per click. Take that, eAds! Now my hosting costs will be covered and then some!

Sadly, it took me many years to figure out that I could make more than "hosting costs and then some". Don't know where my brain was at.

I was using AdSense for cigarette money, till they raised the tax on 'em in Michigan to twice what it'd been. Ok, time to quit smoking. I'll just use it to cover the gasoline.. umm.... Well, that's gone up quite a bit too.

Whatever I touch with my AdSense money turns so expensive I can't afford to buy it anymore.

I started using AdSense to cover hosting costs. Last month I earned over $450 which is the highest earnings I've had in about 3 years :) It's not enough to live on but it helps.
