Hi

Is there an average length of time that a typical Adsense site would see some results?

I have started to set up some sites and don't expect to see results right away but I hope to be making something off them a month or two down the road.

Is that too ambitious?

Any thoughts would be gratefully received.

There is no time limit. You can start making money right away. Your adsense will not just make you money if you dont have any visitors to your site. Promote the crap out of your site and get visitors to your sites.
Visitors = Clicks
Clicks = Money

I think this is overly simplified and is the incorrect expectation that a lot of newbies have.
More visitors means more POTENTIAL for clicks. But the number of clicks, and the resulting money from them, is highly dependent on the relevance of the ads.

The relevance of the ads depends somewhat on the quality of your content on the pages and also somewhat on your diligence in blocking competitve ads.
