could google ban me from adsense if I use images from other sources such as flickr on my site?

How severe is google with this?

Stolen images, you mean?

That's grounds for being banned (not just by AdSense, but by any search engine that receives a DMCA complaint).

depends on which image you use- always check creative commons license before you use any images, sometimes you will be surprised, as many artists welcome other people to use their artwork if you give proper attribution.

As I know, Creative Commons license does not allow the use of the material for commercial porpouses.

Would a site with AdSense be considered as a site with commercial interests?

What if you use photos from the AP wire? I'm not saving them on my hard drive, just linking the photo onto my page from Yahoo's AP photowire service. Is that ok? Seem ok since Drudgereport.com does it

makes a little sense

Hotlinking images on your site...will eventually be replaced with Red X's.

europeforvisitors.....you assume that the poster did not get permission from the owner of the picture. Also, you assume that they are copyrighted pictures. Bottom line, they are not stolen.

What do you mean with red x's?

CaWebSites - Of course that's what he's assuming. Anyway virtually all photographs are copyrighted, and using them without permission is copyright infringement.

There are different Creative Commons licenses, commercial and noncommercial, etc. (see details in the "Some rights reserved" link for each image at Flickr, excepting for the photos with an "All rights reserved" note).

For example (given that small quotes or excerpts are ok in the posting guidelines), in the case of the optional "noncommercial" condition, the C.C. faq says that "people who want to copy or adapt your work, primarily for monetary compensation or financial gain must get your separate permission first".

Of course, a site made primarily to sell products or services is usually considered commercial, but there are different opinions about ads in content sites. An example of licenses for websites are Movable Type's; in this case they consider that "incidental revenue such as Google AdSense, Amazon Associates fees, PayPal tip jars, or other similar programs which aren't the main purpose of the site are okay under the personal [non commercial] license". But this is just an example, and it seems that there is not unanimity about ads and noncommercial licenses.

What jomaxx said.

If the OP had permission use the photos, he wouldn't have needed to ask the question.

Well hold on...does flickr lets hotlinking? some photo albums let you hotlink their images. I know photobucket lets you do that. They even give you the code so you can do it.

Just saw this...

incidental revenue such as Google AdSense

How naive. :-) Nonetheless in virtually any other context, the presence of AdSense ad blocks would clearly indicate that the use is commercial. The only other real exception I can see is if the site is run by an registered charity.

Only your images; see Photobucket's faq.
