AdSense exclusion strategies

Which pages to put ads on and which not

OK, I'm just getting started with websites and with AdSense.

Here's my logic: I'm thinking about putting ads on my most heavy repeat-traffic pages, but removing them from my side-of-the-road "info" pages.

My main page, I want to invite people in and not distract them with ads:

On my informative pages, so people are there to read up and not to have a sale pitched to them:
It's obviously against the rules to have ads on error pages:
404
403
500

Here's a troubling one. I have dozens of submit buttons on this page (only visible to registered users) so each visit may result in a dozen page reloads in a short time span. Is it a bad idea to put ads on those pages?

Does anyone else employ similar strategies? Am I being too conservative with my ad placements?

it'd been my experience that you never know what pages will generate most money. Two of my most visited pages simply don't work with adsense so I don't show ads, and others that have fewer visitors do really well.

I'd be inclined to use a channel for each banner so that you can work out where ads will work on your site. It's a process of experimentation really.

I would say that if a banner has lousy performance I'd consider pulling it. A banner with lots of hits and poor clicks may negatively affect overall earnings as the overall ctr of the site would be low, and smart pricing may penalise you for it. Make sure all of your banners work for you!

Andrew, Andrew, Andrew,

You not only click your own ads to 'test' them now you are breaking WW TOS. Don't you EVER read anything you sign up for?

Go read all the TOS, T&C, etc of Google adsense and then seriously read the TOS for this site.

Reading will keep you out of a lot of trouble and maybe, someday, prevent you from being taken to the cleaners for a bunch of money you may not be able to afford when someone shoves a contract under your nose....READ, READ, READ!

Ann, there's no need to be nasty. I've already apologized, and I would edit my original post if I could but it seems like the "owner edit" button disappears after a few minutes.

Ann was not being nasty at all, just passing on a valuable piece of advise.

Terms of Service should be read before they are agreed with. Otherwise it it all too easy to be in contravention of them.

Here, that means you annoy people a little by posting urls and are unlikely to get a useful response as a result. Elsewhere, in AdSense for example, it can cost you money.

A mod will happen along and delete at least your post and possibly the thread, since it relies on a post that is full of URLs. Best thing is to wait for that to happen, then post again, describing the page types rather than linking to them. The URLs are not necessary to get the answers you are after.

And Welcome to WebmasterWorld! Once you understand the way things are done around here you will find it a useful, helpful and friendly place fillled with great information.
