That's what works for me, but I'd be inclined to experiment on your site to see what works for you.
On sites with little content, a small ad block like a half banner or 125x125 could be good; on a site with lots of text, a large rectangle might be better because it can "compete" better for the viewer's attention.
So...it could come down to the ad/content balance on a particular page, and how well they compete in balance together for the viewer's focus.
For a while the theory on this forum was taht it helps to get rid of low ctr ads as it they hurt you with smart pricing. It appears to me this wasn't accurate. I belive it's how well your the clicks convert not how many clicks you get. So it shouldn't hurt that an ad unit at the bottom of a page gets lower CTR.
