I just joined adsense and put the ads on my site. After one week, I made about twelve dollars with a CTR of slightly over 1%
I haven't done anything yet to attempt to improve my figures since I placed the ads on my site. That will be the source of my future questions.
Today's questions:
question #1. Will my earnings improve as Google gets better at figuring out what types of ads get clicks on my site? I notice that one day, the ads seem to be reflective of my content, and the next day I scratch my head wondering how they thought a visitor to my site would be interested in today's ads. Are they experimenting and trying to optimize their ads to my content?
question #2. I read on this forum lots of people paranoid about getting banned. There's a few things I can think of that might raise a red flag to Google concerning my site. Last summer, a national magazine published the link to my website. My hits skyrocketed for a few weeks. Then a very well-known and popular website put a link to my site on one of their pages. My hits had a huge temporary peak, and a modest but permanent improved average level since then. Would an amount of traffic above my normal average like this raise a red flag?
Also, a radio station once mentioned my web page. I had a huge peak for a few hours. This peak would have been all hits from the same geographic area. Would this raise a red flag?
Sometimes, students use my website and will reference it in a school paper. What if a bunch of students use the school computer to access my site and click a few ads. Will this raise a red flag?
Question 3:
Does it bother Google that there is a forum discussing adsense?

I've read over and over again on this forum, DO NOT CLICK YOUR OWN ADs. But since I am a fan of the content on my page, and the ads are often related to my content, they often appeal to me. Other times, I want to click them just to see what my visitors are clicking. But I refuse the urge, treating them as taboo links. Is there any way to click them without it registering? I'm not trying to drive my click count up, I just want to see them.

One solution to this question is to jot down the name of the website containing the ad you're interested in and visiting that site by typing the URL in the address bar.
