Why is it the less ads you have the more you make?
You can't make that comparison because you didn't just take 2 adblocks off the page, you also added Adlinks.
You'd have to take the Adlinks off the page to see if a single adblock generates more income than multiple adblocks.
If you put the Adlinks in a seperate channel you can check to see how much of the new income is from them.

I wouldn't attribute the windfall so easily unless it sustains itself for a month or two.
My income shot up almost 100% and all I did was install a homemade scraper stopper but it's too early to verify that was the cause although it looks pretty compelling.
Generally, though, I can give you one definite reason.
Some people, myself included, tend to jump out of a site pretty quickly if we see a load of adverts all over the place.
The worst examples (it's a pity I can't post the URL of one particular specimen), can be absolutely appalling. The one I'd like to post had so much advertising that when I tried to look at some content, I didn't think anything had happened because such a small part of the screen changed.
I'm not suggesting that yours is that bad, but if I'm looking for some information and google my way to a site, and it appears to be information poor, I just 'back' to the google list and try another. So even if the site does have good content somewhere, I'm not going to find it, and as I'm not one the site for more than a few seconds there's no chance I'll click an ad.
If you have 4 ads (1 big wide block) on the page you should have the 4 highest paying. With 3 adblocks you might get 12 ads, and number 12 will be paying a lot less than number 1.
I try to avoid lower paying ads. If people really must look at an ad rather than continuing to read my wonderful content I'd rather they look at the expensive ones.
I've had some success with adlinks at the top and an adblock at the bottom.
How does the homemade scraper stopper work if you don't mind saying?
Quite nicely thanks ;)
See another one by Alex K on this WebmasterWorld thread:
[webmasterworld.com...]
If you follow a couple of those threads you'll find the link to his web site with the latest PHP code, instructions for installing it in .htaccess and how to block scraping on all static pages too.
Will take some reading thru to find all the tidbits but well worth it.
Alex's script will stop the high speed scrapers as they can cause time outs for regular SEs that may be crawling at the same time a scraper is overloading your server. For example if Google, Yahoo and MSN are crawling your site at the same time and get a time out then you'll probably drop in the SERPs for that page and so will your AdSense income, this much I've verified with real world attacks on my server.
What I found was the SEs don't de-list your pages from a single incident or two, they just lower you from maybe the top 10 all the way down into the 200s or worse. Therefore when you stop the scraping attacks the SEs can get those pages that previously timed out due to aggressive scrapers and your SERPs for those pages go back up. Saw the same result in 3 search engines so I don't think it's coincidence at all.
BACK TO THE TOPIC...
I overlooked the OP stating "added one link unit" which could be the whole deal with your increase as the link unit drove my income up 30% when I added one to my site.
