How to start with adsense

I've been running adsense on a forums site (which I admin) and it's paying off pretty decently. We've been able to pay for our hosting for a couple of months now with just the adsense money and even sponsor a couple of contests.

Forums aren't all that great for making money anyways so I was thinking of starting a new site with tech-related stuff on it.(Yeah, I know, there are millions out there already). That's primarily because that's the only content I can write on my own. Should I use a CMS to put content on the site or simply wordpress? (Articles will contain pictures and drawings as well)

What do I need to do to get good targetted ads on the site? Having Google crawl my site is enough? Is it wise to put up 2 sets of ads, Adsense and Chikita and see which one performs better or put them in rotation and then see? Has anyone tried to integrate Chikita ads + Google + phpadsnew?

If you produce your own good content and update your site on a regular basis then you may well have the building block of something good.

Fresh content + unique content + lots of nice inbound link will send your site in the right direction. Just remember It doesnt happen over night.

If you use phpadsnew be careful to make sure it doesnt alter the advert code.

Wordpress is pretty powerful now, with the right plugins it can easily be called a CMS itself. Images are easy, "iimage browser" is my favourite, simple and powerful, but there are others that are equally good.

What you go with really depends on how you'll be using the site - if you want a massive site edited by loads of people, then a full CMS might be better. If you're trying to build a community then a nuke-style site would fit your needs. However, if you're just posting regular news and articles, Wordpress is incredibly simple to get off the ground (5-minute install etc.) and has a lot of useful and active support.
