I'm seeing results where a company has a "|" followed by their name which is a 3 letter initial and when I search for the title that is a 3 word phrase followed by | XXX Google is removing the | XXX. It looks like Google is using the breadcrumb schema for the display URL other than the domain. For some reason it is showing the breadcrumb above the page instead of for the actual page. for example /.../breadcrumb/ where breadcrumb is the breadcrumb for the page that links to the page they are listing and not the breadcrumb for the page they are listing.

Is this new? Is there any way to get the full page title and get the right breadcrumb to display?

You're in luck - Google recently created a form to help sites correct such site name errors. See this recent announcement: [webmasterworld.com...]

The site name is fine. This is in the Title and URL.

If it is a WP site, it might be the kind of problem that happens when old WP sites have set up their site title in the Admin > Settings > General Settings pane. I've seen sites set up years ago using that | divider to separate their Site Title and tagline which are not related to the domain name or URLs or sitemaps and Google doesn't use the tagline.
