Losing traffic while ranking #1 and authority things

I am in the dating advice niche for quite some years already. And the last half year a lot of stuff is not really adding up.
I'm curious if anyone has some thoughts about this.

First, I am seeing a loss of traffic over the helpful content update and update a few days ago.
Some articles lost 50% of traffic while they are still on #1 on their main keyword and longtail (according to search console, ahrefs, etc).
This doesn't make sense to me at all and makes it hard to decide what to do. Anyone any clue?

Another thing: my site does quite well EEAT-wise I would say compared to competitors. (not much backlinks except for some press, but none in our branche have in my country).
However, I see two types of sites starting to rank above us:
- Big sites about 100 different things (cosmopolitan for example). Of course high authority in backlinks, but totally no authority in our market. That's weird.
- Smaller sites in my niche with very short superficial articles. Sites that don't have any off-site presence, show no experience, don't do content hubs, etc.

This might be explained due to Helpful Content update. Our articles are longer and detailed (which you might consider good) but apparently google wants supershort articles with no deph at all, that give an instant answer. Even if sites have no topical relevance or strong EEAT.

It's in some way the opposite what we recently hear. So I am curious what you guys make of this.

If other sites are starting to rank above yours, couldn't that explain why your site is losing traffic?

Thanks for replying :) That's for certain articles. But I see other articles that are still ranking 1 for main and longtail keywords (according to different tools) that are loosing 50% traffic. Which is quite weird of course.

Big well-known sites can attract clicks away from small little-knwon sites, even if the latter are above them in the rankings.

Don't rely on tools. Manually inspect with different browsers that you do not use. Download two or three new browsers that you don't currently use (Brave, Firefox, Vivaldi, etc.) and then ONLY use those to check rankings.

Use a VPN to simulate different geographic addresses. One browser for area X geographic area, another browser for area Y and a third browser just for area Z, you get the picture.

It MAY be that the top rankings are really in the People Also Ask sections.
