How to optimize a decade 2b mall website

I just took over a large wholesaler website (over a decade old) that had confusing titles and meta descriptions throughout the site. I'm going to start by changing the titles and meta descriptions of the category pages that get the most hits. What should I do next?

What to do next depends on the weaknesses and strengths of the site. Are you getting any hints or error messages in GSC? Does your traffic show difficulty in navigation? Have you ensured that any required policies are in place and easy to find? Have you got a good FAQ set up so visitors can find answers to common questions? Can people contact you with purchase inquiries? I would start by working on problems that you are aware of and ensure that your information, navigation and payment processes run smoothly and that buyers know what to expect on orders and shipping. If it is good for your visitors, it will help your SEO.

Thank you for your answer, currently my known website issues are.

1. hundreds of categories of the site's title and description are machine-generated, and many categories are not written.

2. The site does not have a site map

3. many pictures of products without alt

4. One third of the site's pages are not indexed

5. The website's article content is not of high quality

6. The style of the website is very crowded and uncomfortable to look at

7. There are many other problems

In the first step, I chose the pages with high click volume to write and modify the title and description. But after doing this step I don't know which direction to go next. And Google analytics data I do not understand very well, because I have only been in the industry for a year, these have not been exposed to, and the company is currently only one optimizer, so I am very distressed.

I think you have answered your own question regarding what to do with that list.

I would start with the pages that do have content first.

Go through each page and manually change the titles of these pages to reflect the content of the page. Also manually check / change / add meta descriptions to said pages, if titles are machine generated then I would hazard a guess that meta descriptions are too, either that or non existent.

While your doing this simply improve the content of each page so it is of a higher quality and add alt to images.

Then do the above for pages with no content and add high quality content to the pages or remove them altogether. Pages with no content are useless and will contribute to one third of the site not being indexed, search engines do not want pages with no content in their index.

Add a sitemap.

If you do not like the style of the web site then change the style to one that looks better, if you are changing the style I would personally do this first.

Then tackle the many other problems you said exist, one by one.

Thanks for the answer, I've read the welcome post. But I only have a "reply" button here, not a "post reply". I understand how to quote other people now, but I still don't understand how to reply to a specific person（I think this feature may be better if it can appear directly on the message box）
