Google's podcast on Search Off the Record discuss redirects, including the differences between 301 and 302, and 307 and 308, and discuss Javascript and meta refresh. They also discuss merging and splitting domains, frustrating geo-targeting redirects, and redirects for mobile and desktop.

i'm not convinced that they have read and understood the HTTP protocol. any response that isn't a 200 OK is assumed to be an error of some sort.

Heck, even a response that IS a 200 OK will sometimes be considered an error thanks to the new, expanded defintion of “soft 404”.
