Google has announced some new features for local publishers, and tools for reporters.

There will soon expand the carousel of local news stories where relevant to the query, and will be launched globally, and in all languages.

Authoritative news sources will also appear alongside national publications, and will also start showing much more local news, such as a local football team news alongside the major football team news.

Tweets will also show in the local news for users.

In the US reporters will get Census Mapper data to help support their queries by embedding the data allowing maps to be embedded to support their local story.
In addition, it says it's improved the the data explorer, the Common Knowledge Project.

Another niche for g to conquer: local news! :)

Actually, a very good idea and "search" becomes more granular along the way.

Authoritative news sources

I've seen opinion surveys which indicate that the U.S. public generally puts more trust in local news sources than in national media.

So I hope that google's algorithm can distinguish between genuine local news sites and bogus local sites created to present the views of a particular political party. About a year ago I read that one U.S. party has created hundreds of centrally-controlled disguised "local news" sites solely for this purpose.
