Google has updated the webmaster document on Discover and it now specifically mentions E-A-T (Expertise, Authoritativeness and Trustworthiness). In addition, it refers to webmasters to specifically consider the following points:-

  • Having page titles that capture the essence of the content, but in a non-clickbait fashion.
  • Avoiding tactics to artificially inflate engagement by using misleading or exaggerated details in preview content (title, snippets, images) to increase appeal, or by withholding crucial information required to understand what the content is about.
  • Avoiding tactics that manipulate appeal by catering to morbid curiosity, titillation, or outrage.
  • Having content that’s timely for current interests, tells a story well, or provides unique insights.
  • Providing clear dates, bylines, information about authors, the publication, the publisher, company or network behind it, and contact information to better build trust and transparency with visitors.
  • Including compelling, high-quality images in your content, especially large images that are more likely to generate visits from Discover. Large images need to be at least 1200 px wide and enabled by the max-image-preview:large setting, or by using AMP. Avoid using a site logo as your image.

I remember the time where we where told, dont create a site for a search engine. Now webmasters can not be creative anymore, they HAVE to create a site for the search engine (Google). Ex. you have a recipe site, where you have a page Title "Thats what you need to make brownies" Now that page need to have 800-1000 word text,....there will be about history, sugars alternatives, popular countries,.bla bla. Thats why I always scroll to the middle of a page there is the content I want to read. It has been that way the last 5-7 years. Where 100-200 would be all it needs.

This new set of advisories APPEARS to indicate "code for g so we can knowledge base your stuff in our serps" or "avoid topics that might appear to be free speech contrary to company policy" or "make sure your pics are large enough we can do something with them."

    Thanks, but no thanks.

    That's E-A-T?

No, of course: that's the first page of the "Make a great Youtube channel in a few days" handbook.

We all have a choice, and i'm going to follow the guidelines as I want the traffic opportunities.

The concept of E-A-T is a good one, and it's what i've used before google thought about taking it onboard.

Good of Google to advise me to consider doing what I have done for the last decade. Perhaps my pages will now start to rank as they did ten years ago.

Therefore what new concepts / suggestions / ideas does Google have that you have not already done?

I am trying hard to think of one single idea / proposal that Google has recommended that was not first thought of / implemented by a webmaster. Has it done anything original?

I remember Googleguy on these forums encouraging people to use a 304 where relevant, win win for all involved. Was a long time ago though.

Most of this is obvious. You should have always done everything this way since you first started creating websites.

Yes, most of this is obvious, but some people need to be told "Don't let greed get in the way of good judgment."

Dare I say it - what others have said - it's pretty much what decent webmasters have been doing for years - nothing new and nothing special.

What may make a difference is the $hit that is amazzon clogging up most results for shopping and non-shopping resuilts... but then G do have to look after A as A pay G...

I suspect many newbies don't realise the value in what Google is actually saying. As I mentioned, it wasn't something new to those that know, but it is helpful to know google is adopting what SEOs have known for years. ;)

Absolutely and us older ones forget the huge first-there learning experience we all had, much of mine was from W3C recommendations, however how many sites these days are actually SEO-led v image design-focused with sound bite quotes?

Recently I have seen some fabulous new sites and all are image based with very little real text on them. It's plainly obvious these sites are only going to succeed purely because of their brand name plus ad spending since there is generally very little content on them for any search engine to digest.

    YMMV!

Should have been common sense practices long ago. Now if Google could only identify the ad filled, spammy aggregations that currently dominate the SERPs. Do as we say, not as we index.
