Continuing from:
Google Updates and SERP Changes - May 2016
https://www.webmasterworld.com/google/4802991.htm [webmasterworld.com]

Monday was a public holiday in the U.S. and also Europe, and I know that many kids in Europe are off school this week, probably on vacation with the parents.

Depending upon your sector, you may be busy, or quiet.

Have you seen the branding tests in Google SERPs?

Put in a search and add the brand name. The brand name appears at the end of the entry, slightly clipping the title.

Looking back in my records and especially pre-2010, it did well on this and most other holidays.

Data centers all mixed up on google again. Seeing same URI on different result pages, so it looks like you switch data centers even while going from one result page to the next. E.g. same result to be found on page 2 and 3.

But it at looks like as if google has repaired the language and localisation problems. Not seeing results from other languages or world regions any more.

...and we're back to all zombie traffic again. Just before the weekend it was fine, but it has been shut off for two days now. Same traffic levels roughly, but zero in the bucket.

Yep, same here. Zombie traffic all day, was hoping for a change since my traffic levels are above normal. I guess Googles happy meter went off and they had to push some buttons.

Okay, looks like conversions are back now, had several in the last 2-3 hours. Can anyone else confirm?

Now it's my turn to be on the opposite side. After a few days of high conversion and high traffic, today seems to be all dead. Back to zero.

@masterjoe: we must be in the same "group"...I too saw everything open up last night between about 4pm and 8pm...conversions on the hour. Today traffic is OK, but lots of foreign visits. We'll see how well this batch converts.

Eerie... there may actually be something to this test pool theory after all. I should also note my overall bounce rate has gone down about 3% over the last few weeks. Now sits at about 11% for one of my main websites.

engine, I'm seeing what you mean about the "branding tests". If you enter your search and a brand name, Google for the most part rewrites the title to a very consistent format...

...with the title of the page... then a space, a colon, and a space... and then the brand name appended at the end.

If the brand name is already there, Google is not appending it again.

@masterjoe,

after 3 month of constant conversions ( through google traffic, not talking about traffic from other sources ) on 3 online stores on 24 May google started to shut of converting traffic. 2 stores are down to 99% from google converting traffic main store about 50%. Remaining conversions are from very low order volume. Traffic are a rollercoaster from da to da 100% to 70%. Hundreds of users in an hour with following downtime with no users for 10 to 15 minutes. User engagement are at a very low point now.
As i talked to other online store owners, i know that they see the same thing.
I stopped PLA because ROI is about ZERO now.

This last updated seem to be aimed online stores and converting traffic. Although it seems to get a liitle bit better.

Offtopic:
google must have a new deal with mozilla firefox, as new updates of firefox resets main search engine to google. Alhtough it is set to bing.

June started really great for us, but today we marked some rank changes , like last month I reported extra and no value traffic from some country's I never even heard of. Those are gone, traffic is a bit down today, so lets hope "zombies" are gone.

Guys keep an eye on the location of search visitors.

One more fact , I already have brand name at the end of my title. So right now, search with brand name serp be like " Long tail keyword | brand - brand.com"
That looks odd. Should I drop brand name from title ?

Has anyone here compared the new Searchmetrics rank data from this week(end) w/ other ranking tools (esp. daily ranking tools) or Google itself? Seeing quite some discrepancies in what they report. Maybe they tested against other data centers or collected their data at a time of Google testing sth? Normally I see a discrepancy of about 1 or 2 positions for one keyword, now it's going in the 10s or even 100s.

Bounce rate has gone through the roof. over 68% now...Used to be 40%...what changed? I'm watching traffic on PIWIK and the majority of visits stay on the site for 0 seconds. Site is on a dedicated server and is fast, so why the incredible rise in bounce?

@samwest, where is the difference between bouncing visitors and zombies?
We see rising counts of zombie traffic over two weeks now.

My own searches ( when using google ) are going to wrong pages too. So bad, bad UE.

@MIW - they are pretty much the same, however, what is odd is that I get a desktop visitor (FF, Win 7) from Google at 8:01 am, they stay for zero seconds, then at 8:41 the same visitor comes back from Google and stays zero seconds again. Page load time was 0.13 seconds. That's really "zombie-ish" behavior. Who knows what they are up to. Probably trying to drive up bounce artificially so ad network partners can rise. I don't know of any humans that exhibit that type of behavior.

they stay for zero seconds

Maybe this is a dumb question, but how do you know that they stay for zero seconds? Couldn't they just be looking at the page without clicking anything? Or is there something I'm missing?

Aristotle - this is according to PIWIK. It says zero seconds in the live traffic view. What's the difference if it's zero seconds or 1 second or 20 seconds...it's one page and done. According to PIWIK - "A page view with no outlinks, downloads, or other action is treated as a bounce." Poor targeting I'm guessing or robots that look like human visits.

If this was an isolated incident that would be one thing, but it's nearly every referral from Google. Once in a while I get what looks like real visitors from Google, the rest of the time it's all zombie...it's getting worse...and I didn't think that was possible.

Watching this again today...visits from other search portals all result in extended multiple page visits. Google is the only one sending garbage. On a side note, I was just looking for an answer to a legal question a friend asked me and when I searched on Google, my query resulted in a p o r n site on page 1, position 2 . Great UE.

Google clearly winnows traffic through their algo, just like separating wheat from the chaff. Maybe we should call it Chaff Traffic instead of Zombie...
