I wanted to find out what the timings between being penalised for spam and getting a warning from Google WT are. I remember watching one of Matt Cutts videos which mentioned within 2 weeks, but have not been able to find it since. the latest video shows that example bad links will be given but I guess this has not been rolled out in the UK yet.

Anyone knows what the time frame would be as someone stated to me they can be months after the penalty which i do not agree with which is why I ask.

I think that google response has changed during the time. Before they were slower than now to act. For an unnatural link warning I saw a site being penalized in rankings after a couple of weeks. For a spam filter we've reacted so quickly returning 404 for the page affected which made us get rid of the spam in 3 days. However I think that the best practice is to always be reactive and solve the issue in the shortest time possible since google can hit you whenever they want.

penalties doesn't expire, they can be removed if manual or get solved if algorithmic. If you've hit by a manual penalty you normally receive a message, in this case you should try to solve the issue which is affectin gyou and then provide webspam team with all the information of the steps you've followed to solve that in a reconsideration request. Be aware that this may take time to get rid of the penalty.

I am pretty sure that John Mueller said that manual penalties DO expire but that they take a LONG time.

hence, he said to try and remove the offending links or be prepare to wait... and wait...

That's what Mueller said, but didn't say how long they take to expire.

In my case I saw a decline for about 10 days and then a huge drop...and it's never recovered.

"do you get any warning before the penalty notice as I have nothing? "

Are you sure it is a manual penalty?

have you filed a reconsideration request?

I thought (but am not sure) that people are getting warnings BEFORE the manual penalty is applied (by a few days), so I would make sure that you are under a manual penalty.

But really, the best thing to do is start getting rid of unnatural links, isn't it?
