The end of Google?

If Microsoft integrates search right into the OS what happens to Google?

If Microsoft integrate their search into the OS will it be the end to those such as Google and Yahoo?

I understand that these are very big players but to me all Microsoft has to do is put the search bar right into the OS as they are already planning and it's the end of the others... (not dead just very little market share)

That is if they have excellent results in the future.

Could you see huge legal issues if they go this route? Why would the surfer type in Google.com or Yahoo.com when they could search strait from their desktop.

I'd say such a set-up would be the only danger to Google.
Google might buy Opera, but that would not be enough.
Yahoo I think will dwindle anyway.

The problem is the legal one.
They might have to open up the intergral search, to others,
however the presentation for other search engines might be less attractivly integrated.

If there is no legal issues that can be won I think G Y and all the rest are in real trouble if M$ integrate their own search into the OS.

It will be a matter of time before the average user will stop going to search engines just use the OS. Let's face it majority of people are just lazy and will not like the extra step to type in a domain name like www.google.com then type the key word (s)

That's why I think M$ is not too worried about Google or even Yahoo! now. Also, with the power behind Yahoo with Ink AV and now OV Google should be a bit worried.

I think a new monopoly case would start and M$ would not dare to handle this issue now.
Remember the case of Java, Browser battle.

Searching the web for some information through MSN only would not be an easy cake for Microsoft to handle alone. This might declare a very big war and who knows, we might see Google, sun, Apple, Red Hat, Netscape uniting soon against the new monopoly.

I have read an article in IEEE Spectrum lately about the possibilities of a new cartel between Red Hat, Sun and Apple. The writer did not mention the potential of the internet to empower this cooperation. Though, I am sure that it might really affects Microsoft trend in the future.

I think Google would lose the lazier surfers, but not most of their surfers. Plainly because people use Google for a reason.. It's relevant to what they search for, they aren't bombarded with ads or popups, and it's pretty easy to navigate through. You search for something, it comes up. Simple and plain as that, and Google has everything you need to complete your search.

NO results can not be better because google main activity is search algorithm while MSN has to take many factors in account.

First, their own ads then paid ads and so on.
This is the difference between a real SE And a portal with a SE. When search is integrated in OS, it would be another mirror for the portal and beleive it or not they are hungry for fast c$sh.

Google would have better algo for sure and maybe less users. Though, it can keep the competition.

I suppose Google could probably offer a kind of Goolebar for the desktop instead of just the browser, then.
Still, they'd lose a little market share, but not that dramatically I believe.
The average Google user is so used to searching there and so satisfied, he doesn't even think of any other methods.
Of course if MSNs results would actually be better, and it were integrated very obviously, like an always visible input box on the desktop, they'd win in the long run -- but I doubt that will happen. MSN will keep burying their results in ads.

Please note: I do think Google is the best but I am concerned with what M$ might do with the new OS.

This has been an ongoing discussion for quite a few months now. The wrap up is that search will be integrated within the file system of the next os, Longhorn- several orders more integrated than it currently is. I've been following this since the beginning of this year, since before the msnbot popped up. The speculation really heated up when the msnbot showed it's face.

Interestingly- Webmasterworld had the first report of msnbot, a junior member, GaryK, spotted it. The news media followed up about 4-5 days later.

Oh, I almost forgot. From two weeks ago, Google's SEO stated in Forbes [forbes.com] that he would consider any serious offer for the purchase of Google.

However, it has been noted/rumoured in other places that MS actually offered to buy Google, but that Google turned them down.

Lots of money folks are betting on AskJeeves for being the next takeover target- but I feel that the LS directory makes a better match to MSN's coming Search Engine.

Microsoft are not so stupid as to use the MSN search as the basis of the next version of the operating system - but even if they fail to develop something decent (I don't think they have the time to really develop their own) they can alwas buy one.

The thing is, one day you will tell your children how you used to start up this thing called a browser and type in the letters 'www.google.com' and then type in a search string and click on each hyperlinked entry in turn to find what you want. They will look confused. Then you will try and explain to them that what they do to create a new document is actually very similar except all the details are hidden. They will become quickly exasperated with their strange, old-fashioned, outdated parent and go back to their homework - writing an essay about the achievement of President Gates.
