Alphabet Chief Executive Officer, Sundar Pichai, has said the company will slow down it's staff hiring for the remainder of 2020.

“The entire global economy is hurting, and Google and Alphabet are not immune to the effects of this global pandemic,” Pichai wrote. “We exist in an ecosystem of partnerships and interconnected businesses, many of whom are feeling significant pain.”

Google is basically an advertising company and advertising is hit very hard in the current pandemic. So I am not surprised by this move. Besides this, they'll probably silently scale back their contract workforce in low-wage countries which moderates non-essential products, like Facebook recently did with 15000 content moderators as mentioned in the topic Social Media Moderation via AI? You're correct, it's an ad company.
I suspect many will be watching Google's quarterly report very closely. It's not immune to what's going on, but, what will be more interesting will be how it picks up when this is eventually all over. I'm not sure it's be over on a specific date, but over time.
