Google has said it's about to establish a new, private transatlantic cable from Virginia Beach to the French Atlantic coastline, and it's names it Dunant. Google expects the cable to come online towards the end of 2020 [blog.google...]

As an aside... Google Fiber [fiber.google.com] has done poorly in my city despite mailed discount offerings to entice users to switch.

Too pricey? $140/mo for internet (100 Mbps) + tv is more than double what I pay for cable (200/20) + tv here (no FTTH yet unfortunately).
pretty soon *all* cable may be under water.
Maybe then, when our memes stop downloading, we'll take global warming seriously ;-)

Although it's headlined as 'increased connectivity', they do mention 'private' 6 times in that blog post.

Increased connectivity for Google services alone, presumably. I don't think they'll be sharing the cable.

Not commercially anyways, at least from my PoV I was referring to potential snooping, given how G discovered heartbleed and tend to like exclusivity in their data collection.

Maybe they'll have better luck marketing it in Canada. I hear internet prices are through-the-roof.
