Musical chairs...

I've written before of Google's purchase of MetaWeb (2010) and how that hastened/enhanced their movement from keywords to entities. Well that was John Giannandrea's startup; the man became head of Google Search and AI dev back in 2016.

And now John Giannandrea has left Google to run Apple’s machine learning and artificial intelligence strategy while early Googler and programmer extraordinaire Jeff Dean takes over Google AI Dev and Ben Gomes (Google UI) now heads Search Dev.

What is particularly intriguing is the managerial separation of Search and AI development.
Note: Google Brain and DeepMind appear to remain separate from AI dev unit, at least for now.

Well, they're using AI for things besides search. (Self-driving cars come to mind.) And who knows how many other uses, or even licensing opportunities, for Google's AI may come down the pike?
