Google Alphabet has been given permission to run it s Project Loon communication balloons over Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands to help the recovery effort. The six-month exercise should help especially as the cellphone towers were damaged in the wake of Irma and Maria.

The roll out commences and Alphabet's Project X says, "project Loon is now supporting basic communication and internet activities like sending text messages and accessing information online for some people with LTE enabled phones."

It's also using machine learning algorithms to keep the balloons correctly positioned.
