Google is to launch new smart watches in 2017 based upon Android Wear 2.0

The new models will not have Google or Pixel branding, but will be branded by the company that is manufacturing them. Google to launch new smart watches in 2017 [theverge.com]

It's also interesting to note that the market for these devices is set to be much weaker than forecast.

According to a new report from eMarketer, wearables like Apple Watch and Fitbit were expected to grow more than 60 percent year-over-year from 2015 to 2016. However, the firm is now cutting that estimate down to just 25 percent growth this year.U.S. wearables market is doing much worse than expected [techcrunch.com]

When (if) I am at the gym, I see the occasional smart watch, or the older health wrist bands, otherwise I never see them worn by anyone and do not know anyone who owns a smart watch, and most of my friends are tech wise.

I think a contributing factor is Google's mandate to stay relevant in all arenas and that Android already fits this medium so well, regardless of the (perceived?) success.

I know a handful of people that had a smartwatch, and I don't see them being used frequently. The only person I saw using it frequently was a bathroom fitter, and he was forever having to charge it.
From what I can see, it's one of those geeky things that appeals to a smaller audience, and, as far as I can see, is avoided by youngsters.
It's one of those things that is fashionable for geeks, imho.

The predictable media coverage will once again boost the brand.
