According to Reuters, Google's modular smartphones, Project Ara, is to be shelved.

The project, announced Jan 15, 2015 [webmasterworld.com], may come to fruition if its partners pick up on it.

When I first heard about this, my thinking was Google were pressing for a standardised form factor. Not purely an aesthetic similarity, but internal components would mount in the same manner. Think laptops, or better still desktops. All look different from the outside but contain many standardised interchangeable components.
