Google has been granted a patent for a solar powered contact lens which would sense the "feature of the wearer" it's set to detect, such as glucose, lactose, urea levels, body temperature, or blood alcohol content.
Note - Microsoft has been working on this for some time, but i hadn't seen any recent reports, unless i've missed them.

As a longtime contact lens wearer with a family history of diabetes, I looked immediately for the one piece of information that was conspicuous by its absence: how this proposed technology would interact with the prescription contact lens that the user is probably already wearing. If I plow through the several thousand (!) comments in the blogspot article, will I find something informative from an optical lab?

I would imagine the technology could, once properly developed, be integrated with a prescription contact lens, although i didn't see that covered in the info. Perhaps, initially, it's just a plain contact lens.
