The search giant said Ms Whitten had "done so much to improve our products and protect our users".
"The privacy and security teams, and everyone else at Google, will continue this hard work to ensure that our users' data is kept safe and secure."

Chris Soghoian, a technologist and policy analyst at the American Civil Liberties Union, told the Threatpost security blog that Mr You's main job would be "to keep the company out of privacy-related trouble" rather than to protect user privacy.
