Interesting article on Motley Fool: "How Google is Killing the Internet" by Seth Jayson [fool.com].

Google insiders are continuing to drop shares on the public at a rate that boggles the mind.

Some of the webmasters of quality sites here might get some satisfaction in seeing their views aired in a more public arena: "Any of you try searching lately? Notice the astounding lack of quality across the board...". He is talking about the deteriorating quality of results across all search engines.

However, Jayson blames theplethora of link farms, splogs, and scraper sites on Adsense. He also cites Google's stranglehold on web search being a simple target for click-frauders. But G will not do anything to stop this as they are bundling in the cash while the going's good. But sooner or later the well will dry out as new structured data search companies sprout up and exclude Google from their user-recommended results.

Well, wouldn't you sell your stockpile of Google shares now?

You also have to factor in Google's failure to effectively penetrate markets beyond search. Email, chat and shopping comparison engines in particular have fared badly.

The real issue for Google, or any search engine, is public perception. Without it you're sunk.

Also with Microsoft gearing up for a post-Vista shakedown things could take an interesting turn over the next few years. It would be a fool that wrote off Google, but things do seem to be changing. If nothing else I have never seen so many ctiticisms of Google before. Combine that with the fact so many of their offerings seem to be about hype and you have a recipe for desperation.

Anyone want to hazard a guess as to how long it'll take MSN to overtake them? I reckon 3 years.
