It looks like the main purpose of the trip was to visit an ethanol producer mill. Brazil is leader in the technology of car engines fueled by ethanol, made of sugar cane, a renewable (and more environment friendly) source of energy; 80% of the cars assembled last year in Brazil could be fueled by gas OR ethanol (drivers could choose the cheapest one).
Reuters quoted Brin: "We just wanted to learn (about this technology). There could even be interest in investments, but I don't think they need it right now".
Brin also spoke about the China censorship affair: "It is a complicated matter. However, we spoke to Human Rights groups and decided that it would be better to enter that market, so as for people to gain access to information and communication".
