Google purchases mobile java developer Reqwireless of Waterloo, Ontario

The local rumor mill has been saying this for a while, but it appears it will be officially confirmed today that Google has purchased Reqwireless, a mobile java apps developer in Waterloo, Ontario, and will be setting up a development shop in the area.

I heard a rumor that Google has acquired this company last night. Anyone know anything about them? They seem to do an HTML browser for Blackberry amongst other mobile things.

Google disclosed yesterday it acquired Reqwireless Inc., which makes Web browser and e-mail software for wireless devices -- although the small wireless company's products are no longer available for purchase.

Also mentioned is the fact that they are growing a technical presence in Waterloo, which is one of Canada's high-tech centers. RIM (the folks that make the BlackBerry) is headquartered there.

I can see G taking on RIM, that's a market that's still segmented enough that Google could take out the big player. RIM's been tied up in that pesky nuissance patent suit for ages now (although it looks like they're about to see the light), they haven't really been on their game for the past while.

I used to have to use their browser on my Blackberry before Verizon came out with their own. Pretty good...
