Google To Release Chrome O/S 'Late Fall' [reuters.com]

Google expects to release its Chrome computer operating system in the "late fall", a top executive said on Wednesday, as it aims a competitive strike at rival Microsoft's Windows.The Chrome system will designed initially to work on laptop PCs, Sundar Pichai, Google's head of the Chrome project told reporters at the Computex PC show.

"We will be selective on how we come to market because we want to deliver a great user experience," he said. "We're thinking on both the hardware and software levels."

thats a bit harsh. you can do loads more than just browse the web with it... you can access your email with gmail, write letters with google docs, edit photos with google picasa and schedule what remains of your life with google calendar.

as long as its google, and lives inside a browser.

you can't save anything to your local disk, you can't access your local disk, you can't, install any programs DO anything except the internet.

So what is the big deal? Is it because google is beating the drum. Yes

asus motherboards have something called express gate built right into the board, don't want to boot all the way to windows and just need something quick?

boot to express gate and in 10 seconds you are into an OS with skype, AIM, firefox, etc.

We have had this option for years, and other mother boards have their own spin on this.

but really, who turns their computer all the way off anymore? sleep mode, press your power button poof you are on your desktop in 5 seconds.

if MS came out with an OS that data logged and sent all info back to redmond people would be out side their HQ with pitch forks and burning stakes.

Hi all,

I'm still nervous at the thought of upgrading to 7, I'm happy on vista, but this O/P has been promised for a while, but as J_RaD points out - it's essentially a browser. I don't like chrome the browser, so I doubt I will try it, though I guess as one of the techie's in the dept will have got it when it comes out, and then persistently tell everyone how great they are.

Personally, I think you are in one of two camps - your either MS (whatever release/version) or Linux, at least that's the general consensus when I ask around the office. I know I have missed of iMac, but I don't know anyone that runs it - I just know as they are expensive ;)

I shall stay with my PC that I use at work, that I have complete administrative rights to, that I can modify when I want, and my trusty laptop at home - so long as FF4 is as good as it promises I will be happy, there's a thought, I wonder what sort of an OS Mozilla could do?

Here's a thought people seem to overloook, why would someone use ChromeOS vs. Android?

If ChromeOS has no offline capability or local storage, which even Android does, it'll never fly.

It is functionless offline.

And the offline mode they are betting on is hanging on HTML5

but so far you can't even login to your computer if you arn't online....so on a fresh install it better detect and install all drivers otherwise you can't login to do it manually, because you don't have internet connection.

Sounds like a good alternative to something like QuickWeb currently installed on my dual-boot netbook, but it certainly wouldn't be the only OS installed on the netbook.

Care to elaborate? I've been using Chrome for a while now, and, apart from the lack of Add-ons it is far superior to Firefox as far as I am concerned.

And the lack of Add-on problem is getting better by the day.

I'm more of a Microsoft guy, but I'm be looking forward to Chrome OS for a tinker. Not sure if it will be of much use to me though. Maybe in Google TV...

I've had trouble with AJAX and pop-ups. The pop-ups open up but are blank sometimes. Some of the add-ons with FF are very useful too.

I use Chrome because it runs AJAX better and faster than any other browser.

Chrome phones home to do useful things, not evil things.

Next time you step into a site with malware because you didn't want the browser to 'phone home' to access the safe surfing API and you get hacked, then you'll know what's evil.

I also don't like a browser that unknowingly installs an extra program that hangs around even after you have uninstalled the browser. along with a handy client ID following me around. who needs to worry about IP tracking with you've got the goog spyware installed straight onto your system.

Its suprising how goog has even fooled tech savvy people to go along with their data collection privacy invasion ways.

there's no real reason why a browser has to "dial home" to check whether a site is legit. all you need to do is build a secure browser that can handle whatever the bad guys throw at it.

if chrome's security is dependant on its ability to dial home every time you visit a site then surely you're inviting a nightmare.

Having a secure browser has nothing to do whatsoever with the face that less savvy users can be exploited with seemingly harmless prompts that trigger downloads, phishing or more.

So naive internet users shouldn't be stopped at known phishing sites before they get phished?

Not all security issues have to do with the browser being insecure, it's also the insecure surfer at risk.

yeah, they were in the papers for breaking laws just a couple of weeks ago, over this wifi business. now they've got governments starting investigations about their dubious data collection methods. and when they get caught they dont even offer to delete the data. all they did was say they'd store it away in some place they'd never look at. very trustworthy company.

I think IncrediBills being reasonable to say cover both aspects of prevention, and at the same time it seems because Googles overall reputation has taken a bit of a hit , anything they say regarding security and privacy seems kinda funny. This new OS may not be recieved as well as they'd hoped because of it.
