Report: Google In Talks With Travel Company ITA [bloomberg.com]

Google Inc. is in talks to acquire ITA Software Inc., a maker of travel programs used by companies including Orbitz Worldwide Inc. and Microsoft Corp., three people familiar with the matter said.

ITA Software, based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, may seek about $1 billion, said two of the people, who asked not to be identified because the discussions haven’t been made public. The negotiations may not lead to a transaction, the people said.

So the WMs with travel sites will probably end up getting kicked out of adwords next.

I wonder whether Google wants to become an OTA or just use such acquisition to provide more advertising space to merchants.

I don't think so. As idolw points out, this could provide a lot more advertising travel-related space. And there's always the Content network. ROI on AdWords for travel sites will probably be affected- we'll just have to see which way.
