I think what we are seeing today is that Google is conquering the world, starting from online content but now they are building infrastructure [smh.com.au...]

Well, it's not for me. The ISP thing, I mean.
But then, what Google does by taking control of the supply chain is basically a well-known business trick to grab a larger share of the profits for themselves. It's called "vertical integration" in Business School terms.
Also, it seems like they like to venture into new industries, so "Google as ISP" wouldn't surprise me. In fact, I'm a bit surprised it's not already a fact.
As for another point in the article, the "Smart Grid", Google is already in the electricity market.
