We're continuing to support Gears so that nothing breaks for sites that use it. But we expect developers to use HTML5 for these features moving forward as it's a standards-based approach that will be available across all browsers.

Did I hear someone say that HTML5 is a long way off? Ummm, I don't think it is as far off as some think it may be. Did you notice that Google has been using the HTML5 DOCTYPE for quite some time now? I've been making use of it also in preparation for upcoming changes. We'll get the framework in place and as soon as those new elements are supported, BOO-YAH! Drop in some <section>s, <nav>s, <article>s, <aside>s, <hgroup>s, <header>s, <footer>s, etc. There are 101 Elements to choose from in HTML5, are you ready?

Note that the simon.html5.org link above, while it may contain good information, is also liable to crash your browser.

The right frame is essentially one giant page, and it will take forever to load.
