My name's Terence and I'm a French student who works on YouTube's monetization. It it failing? What was the point to buy YouTube?
I'm trying to gather every point of view and every information you might have.
I really need people to help me out and I would be glad to have your Feedback.
Thanks!

i think they saw this coming: New Search Paradigm - Shifting from Text to Video [webmasterworld.com...]
once they throw some relevant ads in queries, i think they'll have something.
A French inviation in a good restaurant in Paris in exchange ;-)
Its the classic web idea of 'get traffic'. Monetisation will wait until traffic is there. Then some kind of monetisation based on impressions would be possible. Ads embedded within the video, context-specific text ads, on a CPM basis.
Apart from that, vist the 'plex and get an interview!
Just like Google's original ecomonic model, I don't think exists.

Thanks for the explanation. But that's the high point of my study. I think YouTube is the 3rd most visited website in the world. Everyone is saying that Google is loosing money with YouTube. How is it possible? I can't get it!
PS: I'd love to visit the 'tech but it's quite far from paris isn't it? Anyway if you have a name or a person who could answer me from inside the 'tech. I'm taking it !
Cheers
Some Googlers will talk to the Great Unwashed, but not many. You could try talking to Matt Cutts' blog. However, to quote the Google Search News Charter [webmasterworld.com] (not strictly applicable, but you get the idea):
Webmaster World is not here to be a conduit to reach Google. If you want to give input about specific details on how your site or any other site appears in the search results, please use these channels that Google provides.1. Use the reporting feature in your Webmaster Tools account. Because your account authenticates you, Google tends to give this communication higher priority and credibility.
2. Use this form for giving more anonymous input: Google: Search Quality and Your Feedback [google.com].
3. At the bottom of every search results page, use the link that says "Disatisfied? Help us improve."
4. Google also offers a Webmaster Help Forum [google.com]. Your questions - with specific identifying details about your site - are welcome there.
Be precise but brief in your message to Google. Report both the actual search keywords and explain the problem you see.

Considering that YouTube is one of the most visited Website in the world,
Considering that you told me that you can monetise a website when there's enough traffic...
It's still pretty wierd to me. Okay, they might be some copyrights problems but come on!
(PS: I would be glade to "skype" you. You'll get the chance to be quoted in a French Dissertation :D and it's really interesting to me make these kind of interviews. If you can't that's not a big deal, thanks for you help anyway!)
Google's modus operandi has been likened to throwing things at the wall and seeing what sticks, and it's an approach that has fostered a lot of innovation... but many Google initiatives also appear to stay in perpetual beta as they evolve, and they often morph into something quite different from what they appeared to be at the start.
There does seem to be a YouTube advertising plan coalescing, though, and the approach is presented in a series of videos and downloadable material on this YouTube page, which you can find via the "Advertising" link at the bottom of YouTube's home page....
[youtube.com...]
There's no simple summary of the approach that I can see on the YouTube site, but there's a serviceable summary on a Google page that I found via this WebmasterWorld GOOG thread....
Google Produces "Do More With Less" Document To Help Online Marketers

Quoting from the YouTube section of the "Do More With Less" document...
The leader in online video, YouTube is the premier destination to watch and share original videos worldwide. Maintain brand engagement by allowing your brand to participate in the community through videos, display advertising, customized channels and more.
Note the emphasis in particular on engagement, community participation, shared content, content partnerships, and customized channels. YouTube "only runs ads on the content or videos where [they] have a direct relationship with the content partner." The content has varied, from what I've seen, to feature films and TV shows with ads injected, to sponsored media events, where sponsorship is part of the advertising message.
I suggest clicking the tabs in the order they appear above the video window to see the whole presentation. I haven't downloaded the pdfs. The videos aren't great, but they'll give you a sense of what YouTube is doing.
If you want to come back here with a further summary after you've done some reading, that would be immensely helpful to us.
Additionally, I suggest you take a look at the WebmasterWorld Web Video Creation and Optimization [webmasterworld.com] forum, which is still small enough that you can explore all the posts, and look for references to various types of content partnerships that YouTube has tried, as well as other ways other sites have tried to monetize video. Here and there I remember a handful of threads that might be helpful to you.
Video monetization is very different from search monetization, and YouTube appears to be slowly testing approaches that differ from the obvious AdWords style contextual ad model, as I think they've discovered that such contextual ads aren't likely to work.
