Google Media Server: [googledesktop.blogspot.com] Desktop to TV
Google Media Server is a Windows application that aims to bridge the gap between Google and your TV. It uses Google Desktop technology such as Desktop gadgets for the administration tool and Google Desktop Search to locate media files. All you need is a PC running Google Desktop and a UPnP-enabled device (e.g. a PlayStation 3). At the touch of a button, you can then:

  • Access videos, music, and photos stored on your PC

  • View Picasa Web Albums

  • Play your favorite YouTube videos
  • [desktop.google.com...]

    Play your favorite YouTube videos

They are trying to better monetize YouTube, so play your favorites and give them more viewers to display ads to. ;o)

OMG! I've been wondering when this would happen. This is the beginning of TV=Web=TV ... infinate tv channels ... anyone can broadcast ... 15 minutes of fame ...

Wow, Google, here I never knew there was even a gap at all until you pointed it out for me! ;)

However, I guess this might have some interest for people who actually watch TV or movies. Our family has a TV but it hasn't been turned on for months.

How WILL we define fame if everyone has their own TV channel? I'm wondering when the mainstream media is going to figure out that no one cares anymore about the "new TV season," etc.

Me: We need to buy a new flat-screen TV.
    Wife: Why?
    Me: Uh. Good question.

In South Africa, where internet access still costs a fortune, a flat screen TV is still a highly sort after piece of technology.

I can imagine there are many other countries in the world outside of the main western countries where this is still true. I can also imagine there are probably a few within the main western countries of the world as well!

Death of TV as we know it is near..

On demand TV that utilise the web will be its replacement.

    ---

There’s already devices which are bridging the gap between PC and TV. I bought this thing last year, which has killed the TV for me. I'm seeing simluar versions appearing in the retail stores.

It's already dead as far as I'm concerned. I got tired of the same 'ole, same 'ole junk and bit the bullet and got on-demand cable. It was well worth the extra $$$. I was wondering the other day when they are going to come up with an easier method of searching for movies. Maybe this is it.
