Today, Google announced the addition of Featured Content for Google Earth, which consists of multimedia overlays from different content providers.

Initial Featured Content comes from the likes of National Geographic, the Jane Goodall Institute, the US National Park Service, Discovery Networks, and the United Nations Environmental Program.....and.....can be activated from a new drop-down menu in the Layers sidebar; once it is selected, small icons representing featured content litter the globe and users can access information by clicking on one of them.

played around with this late last night. The new content is great, but there is a huge amount of information missing.

Are there any GIS gurus out there that can explain for us webmasters why this is such a big deal? I know this IS a big deal, I just don't have the background to see all the specific monetizing applications.

"Google's mission is to organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful."

I think Google correctly has faith that fulfilling this mission will ultimately acrue to its favor. In the case of Google Earth, it's important to keep in mind that not all information is search phrase-based. Some is geographically-based.

Take a look at "Google Earth Pro, for professional, commercial uses."

Think about tying together geographical data with demographic or geological data, eg, and presenting it visually... and then exporting hard numbers, if that's what you want, in a spread sheet.
