Technology or Marketing?

I think by far, Google's success is mainly the success of Google's advanced search technology. But Google's marketing is not as good as its technology.

Regarding marketing, Google does pretty well in AdWords but its performance in marketing its (site)search engine to enterprises seems very soso.

What? - IMHO Google is a brilliant marketing machine , marketing is not just putting TV commercials or something like that .

Google is one of the best word of mouth marketing success of our times . Until 2003 they managed to keep the positive innocent PR buzz in the media with almost zero budget! .

The only other internet company with this big success in a short time with a minscule marketing budget (50k) is Hotmail (with its viral ad tag in each outgoing mail)

Google's strategy of concentrating on improving the technology of their search engine instead of going all out with a bang proved to be their strongest strategy as yet. In a recent Business 2.0 article, there is a comparison of how Google and Yahoo are reinvesting their revenues -- around 70% for Google goes to R&D whereas Yahoo spends their money more on marketing, and far less on R&D.

Given that Yahoo's search engine is as good as Google's now, I don't know that 70% going into R&D is such a good idea, sounds like engineers tooting their own horns a bit too much.
