Password Protected folders

I was wondering if there is a way to password protect a folder without protecting its subfolders and files.

I use the folder protection in cpanel, but by default it protects the whole folder including the subfolders. I want to protect only the folder...how do I do this? anything to change in .htaccess?

i think there is no workaround with .htaccess

you can try the directory directive, but i think it'll work quite the same and for that you need to modify the apache config.
