I was just wondering, how come some sites are www2.thesite.com? Eg, www2.bt.com but not www2.webmasterworld.com? Why is the two there? How did it get there? What's going on?!

Most likely due to load balancing scheme on the respective site’s servers.

It is simply an arbitrary subdomain name, like search.msn.com, www2.weather.com, or www.webmasterworld.com. You can name a subdomain whatever you want, within the domain- and URL-naming rules.
