Help with mod_rewrite

Im new here but have been browsing for a while, anyway to the nity gritty

We have urls that end in holiday_guides.php?id=6 and our blog that ends in late-deals/?page_id=454

I have tried varios re write rules with no success for eg
Options +FollowSymLinksRewriteEngine onRewriteRule ^late-deals/(.*)/$ /late-deals/?$1
which give a 500 server error

Thank you for your help in advance before the laptop goes out of the window.

I note that there are no line-enders in the code you posted. Maybe it's that simple.

However, before you defenestrate your laptop, take a read through the documents cited in our forum charter [webmasterworld.com] and the tutorials in the Apache forum section of the WebmasterWorld library [webmasterworld.com].

Once you've read through those linked documents, you'll be better able to define and describe the goal of your project. That's more than half the task right there.
