404 returning a 500

parsing html as php - causing problems

html being parsed as php in httpd.conf

php installed as a CGI

404 (for a htm or html extension) is returning a 500 error

is the only way to cure this to compile PHP as an Apache module?

renaming files not an option

any benefits or *real* issues in compiling PHP as module instead of CGI?
