Yes, brand-nubie to Apache, moving from Y! hosting with a WP blog and a homepage but the blog gives a 404 now with it's sub-dir inside the htdocs folder on my box, I guess it doesn't go there?.

I have the homepage up and it's stylesheet but not the pics that are associated with it; they were in a images sub-dir coming off my domain so I assumed they were in a folder off my htdocs but that didn't work either, same with the WP folder holding the blog, the blog index.php produces a 403 now. I am going thru XAMPP but after creating the db (which of course is empty of tables) and the 404, I haven't gotten anywhere. Finally, I still don't exactly how it works but I assume that I am acting as the host, using the Apache software as my server to push it to the web, and that tells me that when I'm turned off for whatever reason, the site is not accessible to anybody else, please correct me if I'm wrong. Thx so much for any help, sorry to burden with so much, I want to go get a book but I'm not sure how current any of them would be (please advise). Finally. I'm XPsp2 HOME, does that last part matter? TIA

Welcome to WebmasterWorld BillyG,

It seems there may be a bunch of issues here. Which gives me a lot of questions.

1. does your ISP actually allow incoming traffic on the plan that you have? I am assuming you plan on hosting this from home from now on.

2. it looks like you may have the setup of xampp done, does it work at all? if, in your browser, you go to localhost or to 127.0.0.1 does anything happen? This is with apache running.

3. when you say "I have the homepage up and it's stylesheet but not the pics that are associated with it". Do you know if you actually have a copy of them or do they just not work when you view tha page in your browser?

I assume that I am acting as the host, using the Apache software as my server to push it to the web, and that tells me that when I'm turned off for whatever reason, the site is not accessible to anybody else, please correct me if I'm wrong.

that is exactly right

I want to go get a book but I'm not sure how current any of them would be

there are good books around, O'Reilly has a ton, but you may be better off just using the web resources around such as [apache.org...] or even using the resource for xampp [apachefriends.org...] which will help with the package as a whole.

I'm XPsp2 HOME, does that last part matter?

I believe you can host with home though I am not 100% sure, there may be a couple differences using home as opposed to pro
