Redirect Mobile phones to differnt url? wml?

We are looking to redirect mobile phones to an alternative url.. we want to really only target phones that do wml or xhtml.. I have looked at the apache mod_rewrite but cant really figure out what the best way to detect wml capable phones.. is anyone doing somethign like this?

I migh tbe wrong but I belive wireless devices with request their markup language before anythign else? For example a wap phone will look for .wml when you send it to a directory. Havign your index.wml along side index.htm works?
